“Baptism” – Whole School Prayer Resources

Good morning everyone, we invite you to begin by making the Sign of the Cross:

On Sunday, the Catholic Church celebrated the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

In the Catholic Church, Baptism is the first sacrament — the doorway into the Christian life. It is a momentous event where we are welcomed into the Catholic Church and become members of the Body of Christ as sons and daughters of God.

Now it’s time to learn more about this Sacrament with our word of the week video from 12N!

Take a few minutes to chat with your tutor and the people around you to share your own experiences of Baptism.

1. Are you baptised? If yes, what do you know about your baptism? Can you remember anything from the day — photos, stories, who was there?

2. Where were you baptised? Was it your local parish? A family church? Somewhere meaningful to your family?

3. When was the last time you went to a baptism? What do you remember about it? What stood out to you — the symbols, the people, the atmosphere?

Loving God, Thank you for the gift of baptism and for the reminder that we are your beloved children. Help us to remember that we are called by name, known by you, and loved without conditions.
As we go through this week, guide our thoughts, our words, and our actions. Fill us with your Spirit so that we can bring kindness, hope, and light to the people around us.

Today, we are going to watch a video from The Redeemed as we explore the theme of “Identity” in this week of Baptism. In the Catholic faith, Baptism is the moment God speaks over us what He spoke over Jesus: “You are my beloved child.” It gives us a new identity as God’s children, part of the Church, and people called to follow Jesus’ mission.

God’s identity for us shows us that our worth doesn’t come from popularity, achievements, or how others see us. Our deepest identity is something we receive, not something we have to earn: we are loved, chosen and known by God.

Let us give thanks to God for our unique identity as we pray…

Loving Father, Thank you for creating us with love and purpose. You remind us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, your beloved children.

Help us to remember that our identity comes from you — chosen, known, and loved beyond measure. Nothing we do can ever change your love for us.

Guide us back to this truth whenever we feel unsure, and help us live with confidence in who you created us to be.

Amen.

Baptism is the beginning of your journey of faith. It’s a moment worth celebrating every year!

Some people might celebrate their Baptism anniversary by renewing their baptismal vows, going for a special dinner, lighting your baptismal candle, or looking at and sharing photos from your baptism, or they might receive a card or prayer from their parents or God-parents.

In your prayer journals, we would like you to design a card that celebrates the joy of Baptism. This can be a “Happy Baptism Day!” card or a “Happy Baptism Anniversary!” card.

Baptism is a beautiful celebration and if you have been baptised yourselves, we hope this will inspire you to find out your Baptism anniversary so that you can add it to the calendar and have an excuse to celebrate! (Take this away as a mission to complete one evening this week and if you can find a photo from your baptism, bring it in to share with your form!)

When you design your baptism card, make sure to include a title, some symbols of baptism, a short message or prayer and maybe include a special patron saint.

Here are some ideas and symbols to help you with your decorations:

In Baptism…

• You are welcomed into the Church family
  • This is shown by: Open church doors, the community gathered in prayer
    
• You become a child of God in a new way
  • This is shown by: Water, which washes, gives life, and begins something new
    
• You receive the light of Christ
  • This is shown by: The baptismal candle lit from the Easter Candle
    
• You join the Universal Church
  • This is shown by: Anointing with holy Chrism, marking you as belonging to Christ and the worldwide Church
    
• Baptism is the beginning of your journey of faith
  • This is shown by: The white garment, symbolising a fresh start and a life of growing in faith
