This week’s prayer resources were planned by year 8 – Thank you!

This week we are praying for:

• All people who have died and their families
• People who are homeless and who are struggling in the winter

• Year 11 Tutors – this week you will receive an email from Ruth with a Mass part for students to prepare during form time. These Mass parts will be presented in their year group Mass which will start the retreat day off.
• Year 11 will have normal form time on Friday (/time to rehearse their Mass parts) and then they will be off timetable from P1-5 with their usual teaching staff and the chaplains.

Black History Month Creative Piece

We often hear a lot about the Saints, but how well do we know some of the ones we may have met this year? This week helps us to think about the Communion of Saints as we reflect on the feast of All Saints that was celebrated at the end of half term.

Year 8 have made an awesome quiz to see who really knows their saints and who can identify them just by hearing facts about their lives.

We were so impressed by the research done by our year 8s and their knowledge of the saints!

Pause the video after each quiz question and write the answer down or share with your partner/form – your staff member will decided.

All Souls’ Day, on November 2nd, is a day when Catholics remember and pray for those who have died and are believed to be in Purgatory. Purgatory is a state of purification where souls prepare to enter Heaven.

On this day, people visit cemeteries, decorate graves, and light candles in memory of their loved ones. They also attend Mass and offer prayers for the souls in Purgatory, asking God to show them mercy and welcome them into Heaven.

All Souls’ Day is a reminder of our connection to those who have passed away and a time to reflect on the hope of eternal life.

The Eternal Rest Prayer is a special prayer in the Catholic Church used to pray for the souls of people who have died. It’s a way of asking God to give peace and rest to those who have passed away and to welcome them into heaven.

Where did the prayer come from? This prayer has been part of Catholic tradition for many centuries and is often said on All Souls Day, during funerals, and when people want to remember loved ones. It’s connected to the belief in the communion of saints, which means that the Church, both on earth and in heaven, is united in prayer for one another. This prayer helps people feel close to those who have passed and shows trust that God is taking care of them.

The Eternal Rest Prayer reminds us that even after someone dies, we can still show them love by praying for them.

We would like you to think of a person or a group of people you would like to remember. We invite you all to say this prayer together out loud for all souls…

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Amen.

Each form should have a piece of card with the eternal rest prayer on it. We invite you to pass the card around the room and write a prayer intention on it in this month of remembrance. Your prayer intention might be for someone you know who has died, someone you don’t know but would like to remember, a whole community or group of people, all people who have died, the saints, or those who are grieving. If you don’t want to write a name, you could draw a symbol or image that reminds you of a person or people.

Each form will also have a “Let us remember them” candle template. We invite you to decorate the candle template for your form prayer boards and light your electric tea light as we remember those who have died.

Listen to the song below as you pass the card around the room and pray for all souls. Once you have finished, pin the card on your prayer board as a reminder to pray for all souls throughout the month of November.

Friday lunchtime – There will be a collection station on the stage over lunchtime today and next week for students who paid for photo booth strips before half term. There will also be an orders list if you would like to pay for more copies to be printed. We have a list of students names who paid for the photos and we will need to tick your name off the list after you have collected your photo strip. If you missed the photo booth or can’t wait for the next one, do not fear, the photo booth will return for our Red Week fundraiser for Aid to the Church in Need later this month and we’ll do a Christmas photo booth in December!

This week, we’re launching our Chaplaincy house competition—Rolling with the Saints!

Your task is to choose at least one saint to research and celebrate. You’ve been given one toilet roll, but if you want to increase your chances of winning, you can make multiple saints!

Today, take some time to learn about the saint(s) you’d like to represent – be creative! Think about their story, what they are known for, and how you can bring their character to life using a toilet roll! Consider their appearance, any special symbols, and key details that make them unique and inspiring.

Once you’ve chosen your saint(s), plan out what your sculpture will look like. Will your saint be holding something special? What colours or features will help others recognise them?

You’ll also need to create a plaque for your saint. This should include their name, and you could add an interesting fact about them or a meaningful quote from them.

Next week, we’ll begin decorating, and you’ll have the chance to turn your ideas into a toilet roll sculpture. Have a think over the weekend if there are any resources you could bring in to help with the decorations.

This is a competition between forms, with exciting prizes for the winning group, so get ready to get creative!…And there will be a roll with the saints cat walk at the end of the month to celebrate your creations!
