We are in the 2nd week of Ordinary Time and the word of the week is Discipleship!
This week we are praying for…
- For the growth of the Church
- For Vocations
- Fr John Martin who is in hospital and unwell at this time
- Fr Evarist who is away visiting his family in Tanzania
- For all who are homeless and who are sleeping rough in the cold weather

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our card for Fr John Martin who is in hospital at the moment. We continue to keep Fr John in our prayers and pray that he receives rest and healing.

If you haven’t already, please take down the old Epiphany Blessing Sign “20……25” and put up your new Epiphany Blessing Sign “20…..26”! These can be collected from the staff room if you don’t have a new one yet. Thank you to our year 7’s for making them!

Each week, one form will conduct a litter pick during one Becket reads that week.
Your tutor will decide which Becket reads day to do the litter picking in. Your tutors will only need to supervise.
- You will be in groups of 3 max (no groups of 1).
- You will only litter pick outdoors on school site.
- Per group, you will be given 1 litter grabber, 1 bin bag and 1 pair of gloves. The person holding the bag will wear the gloves.
- Equipment is to be collected from B19 at the start of Becket reads after the register.
- Equipment is to be handed in at the end of Becket reads in B19 on the bell for 10:25.
- Bin bags with litter in are to be put in the large main rubbish bins outside the atrium.
- Health and safety:
- No picking up of rubbish with your hands (even if wearing gloves), use the grabbers only.
- No glass or sharp objects are to be picked up (even if with the grabber).

Whilst we (8B) were planning the resources we thought about what it means to be a young person who chooses to be a disciple of Jesus.
One of the most powerful quotes from Saint John Paul II regarding young people as disciples comes from his message for the 16th World Youth Day (2001).
In this message, he directly connects the “cost” of discipleship to the everyday lives of young people:
“I invite you to reflect on the conditions that Jesus asked of those who wanted to be his disciples: ‘If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’ … Love is the condition for following him, but it is sacrifice that is the proof of that love.”

Pope Leo carries on a similar message for the young people of today…
Choosing to follow Jesus as a young person isn’t always easy. It means swimming against the current when the world tells you to put yourself first, chase popularity, or avoid anything that feels difficult. Jesus never pretended that discipleship was effortless — he spoke honestly about taking up our cross daily.
Think about what “cross” Jesus might be calling you to carry as His disciple. Below are some ideas you can share. Then, choose at least one “cross” that you are going to commit to carrying this week:
- Choosing kindness when others choose cruelty
- Standing up for someone who is alone, even if it costs you popularity
- Saying “no” to gossip, even when everyone else joins in
- Making time for prayer when life feels busy
- Admitting mistakes and trying again
- Choosing forgiveness over holding grudges
We remember that Jesus is with us as we carry this cross as our mission…
Lord Jesus,
You are the beauty that attracts us and the truth that satisfies our hearts.
We hear the words of Saint John Paul II echoing in our school today:
“Do not be afraid!”
Do not be afraid to be the saints of the new millennium.
Do not be afraid to follow the path of discipleship,
even when the road is steep and the way is not easy.
When we are tempted to settle for small dreams,
remind us that it is You who stirs in us the desire to do something great.
When we feel like we are just one person in a large school,
remind us that we are “the sum of the Father’s love for us.”
Help us to be Salt that brings flavour to our community
and Light that burns away the darkness of loneliness or unkindness.
Give us the courage to “put out into the deep,”
trusting that as Your disciples, we never walk alone.
St. John Paul II, pray for us. Amen.

On Sunday, the Church celebrated Peace Sunday, and the theme given by Pope Leo for this year was: “Peace be with you all: Towards an ‘unarmed and disarming peace’.”
At first, the theme sounds a little wordy, so let’s break it down…
First, an “unarmed peace” – Pope Leo reminds us that true peace doesn’t come from force, weapons, or fear, but from choosing understanding, justice, and dialogue.
Second, a “disarming peace” – Pope Leo calls us to “disarm” our own hearts: to let go of anger, defensiveness, and the need to win, so we can meet others with patience and compassion.
Pax Christi England and Wales (which means “Peace of Christ” in Latin) have created a form time resource to help us better reflect on the theme of peace. As you have a look through the powerpoint, have your prayer journals open ready to reflect in.
Respond to slide 6 – In your prayer journals we invite you to answer the question: “What would help build peace in your school or community?” You can write or draw your answers to this question and be ready to share some ideas to the rest of your group!

This week we’ve been exploring what it means to be a disciple – a follower. In this week’s COTW mission, Mr Udoh challenged us to think honestly about the voices, people and ideas we follow in our daily lives – in school, on social media, on the weekend. Some voices lift us up, guide us, and help us grow. Others can distract us, pressure us, or pull us away from who we are called to be.
Take a moment to think quietly: Who influences you the most? Are they leading you closer to the person God wants you to become?
Pick a Side Game
Today we’re going to play a game called Pick a Side. You’ll hear a question, and you need to choose your answer by moving to the LEFT or the RIGHT side of the room.
This game is all about thinking for yourself – not just following your friends or the crowd.

Before you begin your Friday and as we get closer to the weekend, 8B would like to invite you to make a simple discipleship pledge in response to Mr Udoh’s mission this week.
We would like you to share with one another how you are going to respond to Mr Udoh’s mission:
What is one way you are going to try to follow Jesus’ teachings more closely this week?
Maybe it’s choosing kindness, forgiving someone, being more patient, helping someone who needs support, or spending a moment each day in prayer.
Now think about Mr Udoh’s second part of your mission privately in your heart:
Who or what do you need to stop following because it isn’t good for you?
Is there a voice, a habit, a trend, or a pressure that doesn’t have your best interests at heart?
Let Us Finish With a Prayer together…
Loving God, Help us to follow the right voices. Give us strength and courage to be Your disciples, even when it’s hard or when obstacles get in the way. Guide our choices, shape our hearts, and lead us closer to You each day.

1. Put bean bags in classrooms for social times and do a rota that gives people who don’t usually talk the opportunity to sit and chat for ten minutes.
2. In PD, we should learn about other peoples perspectives so that we understand how to be inclusive and nice to people that aren’t like us.
