We are in the 1st week of Lent and the word of the week is Prayer
This week we are praying for…
- Sport, positive role models and athletes, our PE departments, as we give thanks for the joy and inspiration the Winter Olympics has brought us.
- We pray for an end to world hunger and food poverty, as we prepare to mark CAFOD’s family fast day.
- We pray Pope Leo’s prayer intention for February – for children suffering from incurable diseases and their families, that they receive the necessary medical care and support they need, never losing strength and hope.
Please keep them in your prayers this week and don’t forget to add any suggestions for prayer intentions to the comments box below, especially as we enter the season of Lent, a season of prayer!

On Friday the church marks CAFOD’s Family Fast Day. Soup and a bread roll will not be sold on Friday as there are practical lessons in the food department but the Chaplaincy team will be selling soup and a bread roll in the next couple of weeks in Lent (date TBC! Keep an eye on the notices).
On Friday, CAFOD challenges us to eat simply, pray for others and raise awareness for those who are living in poverty. Think about the treats you spend your money on and consider eating more simply and donating the money you would have spent on treats to CAFOD!

Each week, one form will conduct a litter pick during one Becket reads that week.
Your tutor will decide which Becket reads day to do the litter picking in. Your tutors will only need to supervise.
- You will be in groups of 3 max (no groups of 1).
- You will only litter pick outdoors on school site.
- Per group, you will be given 1 litter grabber, 1 bin bag and 1 pair of gloves. The person holding the bag will wear the gloves.
- Equipment is to be collected from B19 at the start of Becket reads after the register.
- Equipment is to be handed in at the end of Becket reads in B19 on the bell for 10:25.
- Bin bags with litter in are to be put in the large main rubbish bins outside the atrium.
- Health and safety:
- No picking up of rubbish with your hands (even if wearing gloves), use the grabbers only.
- No glass or sharp objects are to be picked up (even if with the grabber).
Search for the Light – Briars Open Retreat – Y10-13
This exciting Easter retreat at The Briars is open to all young people who are in Year 10 to 13 and will take place from the 2nd – 5th April 2026 – this retreat is not run by school and takes place during the Easter holidays.
The retreat is £55 per person. There will be some bursaries available through the St Francis of Assisi fund. There will also be lifts available from our local train station Ambergate for those young people relying on the train for transport.

We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable half term! On Wednesday of half term, the church celebrated Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of a new Liturgical season – Lent!
We are now in the first week of Lent and the word of the week is Prayer! Let’s hear from 7B to learn more about this very important pillar and season!
Thanks 7B! So as we start a new season in the church, make sure to update your Liturgical wheels and Liturgical colour flipcharts with the correct colour – purple!
Let’s get into some discussion about prayer! Where do you pray? When do you pray? What do you pray about? Do you use anything to help you pray – the bible, an app, music? What is your favourite way to pray? Do you have any tips you can share with your form that they could try this Lent?

For today’s resource, we are going to hear a Gospel reflection from the lovely 7B. They have chosen to share the special scripture where Jesus teaches us to pray. Before you press play, please remove any distractions and get into a comfortable position.
Jesus often reminds us that prayer doesn’t need to be complicated or perfect. His words show us that God already knows our hearts and invites us to speak to Him with honesty and simplicity. When we aren’t sure what to say, we can simply use the words He gave us Himself.
And now, as one school community, let us pray together the prayer that Jesus taught us…
You could try the Lord’s Prayer in British Sign Language as we think about exploring different ways of praying this week.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

Today’s prayer journal resource from 7B is inspired by a piece of scripture from Matthew’s Gospel…
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
Matthew 6:6-8
We know that God wants us to talk to Him regularly and openly. But sometimes praying can feel difficult. We can worry about saying the right words, or feel unsure about what to do.
From this scripture, we are reminded God always listens and wants us to come closer. And he just wants us to be us – no special language required!
For the next few minutes, we would like you to create your own short prayer to God in your prayer journals – try not to over think it, just write or draw what’s on your heart today.
You might want to:
- thank God for something
- ask for help with something
- pray for a person or situation
- reflect on what you want from this Lenten journey
- or simply tell God how you’re feeling today
If you have colours feel free to use them and add drawings to your prayer or craft your prayer in a creative way.
As you write, take a moment to listen to this song and let it guide your thoughts and intentions:
When you’ve finished writing your prayer for the week, take a quiet moment to read it back to yourself and offer it to God.
