We are in the 7th week of Eastertide and the word of the week is “Communication”!
This week’s Prayer Resources have been made by the Respect and Diversity Team and the News and Communications Team!
This week’s Prayer Intentions…
- We continue to pray for Year 11 and Year 13 students who are sitting their GCSEs and A Levels
- We pray for all who work in communications
- We pray for all of our Becket journalists, media students and chaplaincy mission teams who help to share important news with our community
- We pray for our diverse and vibrant community as we get ready to celebrate culture day!
- We pray for all of the young people who are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend! Do let your form and friends know if that’s you and they can keep you in their prayers!

Notices
Year 6 transition visits are taking place this week. Mrs Cartwright has sent staff an email with list of Y7 students who will be helping visit the primaries this week.
Please be aware that Joe/Ruth, Mrs Coe, Mrs Paterson, Ms Roberts and Mrs Virgo will be on these visits throughout the week.
Please make sure you have seen both virtual COTWs from last week’s “Example” resources if you missed either of them!
Culture Day – please see details and poster below. There will be cameras going round on Friday to capture your wonderful outfits as happened last year. Please make sure that you only get in photos if you have photo/video consent to be on school socials/ website / newsletters. If you are not sure, please check this with your parent/ carer at home and update your consent on arbor if needed.
Year 9 Briars – Mon 1st – Fri 5th June
- There will be an important meeting for the year 9 Briars group to attend during Tuesday form time. Please register with staff and then come straight to the chapel.
- We are still missing some consent forms, you must return these forms to enable you to go on the trip. Please return them to the chapel ASAP and see Ruth if you need a new letter.
Information regarding the first day back after half term for the year 9 Briars students: - Om Monday 1st May, year 9 Briars students are allowed to come in own clothes. All clothing must be appropriate. Make sure to bring your suitcase with you too!
- Any medication needs be dropped off with Ruth/Joe in the chapel on Monday morning, before the 8:40am bell.
- Suitcases need to be dropped off on the hall stage, before the 8:40am bell as there will be COTWs first thing.
- You will be in normal lessons on Monday – don’t forget to bring all of your books/ equipment/ conduct cards/ PE kits etc!
- At the end of the school day, the year 9 Briars group will need to collect their suitcases and come straight to the chapel for final announcements and departures.
- Students will return just before the end of the school day on Friday.
Culture day! – Friday 22nd May
Please carefully read through the plans for the day so that everyone can get prepared for this joyful occasion and fully celebrate our vibrant school community!
Organised by the Respect & Diversity Chaplaincy Mission Team and the Becket School Council, Culture Day will happen on Friday 22nd May (just before Pentecost Sunday – the birthday of the Church), when the Good News was shared across languages and cultures by the disciples.
What to Wear:
On Friday 22nd May, students are invited to wear:
- Traditional or cultural dress that reflects their heritage
- A national sports shirt (no club teams)
- Colours of their country or culture
All clothing must be respectful, with no offensive symbols or inappropriate logos.
Form Time Celebrations:
During form time, each tutor group will host a Pentecost celebration with their tutor. You could:
- Share food from different cultures
- Bring an item for cultural show & tell
- Share music, dance, or a short video
- Speak or perform in different languages
Form prayer resources will be available on Be Inspirational.
Lunchtime Celebrations:
Talent Show!! – You said, we did…by popular demand we are going to host a culture day extravaganza!
At lunchtime, we will host a celebratory culture day talent show, featuring 1–2 entries from each house. Houses are welcome to collaborate on acts – this is a celebration, not a competition!
Performances might include:
- Dance
- Music or instrumental performances
- Singing
- Poetry or spoken word
- Other forms of cultural performance
Please speak to your House Captains or Heads of House if you are interested!!
Sharing Table Fundraiser
There will be a food sharing table in the hall during the talent show.
Students are invited to donate items such as:
- Cakes and biscuits
- Sweet treats or desserts
- Cultural snack dishes (e.g. samosas, spring rolls, pastries, flatbreads)
Food will be sold at a small price – please bring some change.
All proceeds will go towards CAFOD.
Important: Please include a list of ingredients for any food donations. We are a nut-free school – no nuts allowed please.
Culture Day – Period 5 – Pay to Play Fundraiser – students and staff off timetable
During period 5 on culture day, our celebrations will conclude with a pay to play fundraiser organised by the School Council. Please see email from Miss Pyne.

This week, we are thinking about communication and the many ways we express ourselves and our faith.
One powerful way we can communicate our thoughts and feelings is through music.
You may have heard of a Christian songwriter called Forrest Frank, who has become popular on TikTok. You might have even seen this viral dance linked to one of his songs:
Recently, he has started an “open verse challenge” on tiktok, inviting people to create their own verses to his new song.
Here are a couple of examples:

The News and Communications Team would like to invite you to take part in your own open verse challenge. Work together as a form, or take it on as an individual challenge (to work on in school or at home)
We challenge you to create your own verse inspired by faith!
If you would like to submit your written verse or even be filmed performing it, we would love to hear from you and put it together!

On Sunday the Catholic Church celebrated World Communications Day and the theme was: Preserving Human Voices and Faces
In Pope Leo’s letter for world communications day, he reminds us that our faces and voices are sacred because they show who we are and reflect God’s love.
Communication is not just about sharing information – it’s about real relationships between real people.
Today, we live in a world shaped by AI and digital technology and this brings both opportunities and challenges.
Probably everyone in your form room has used AI at some point or definitely some form of digital technology, so we have some questions for you discuss in your forms, share your ideas and then click on the prompts box to see if any of your ideas match with Pope Leo’s!

In a digital world, we must protect real communication, real relationships and what makes us human.

Now set yourself a challenge for this week:
👉 Choose one positive action to improve how you use technology.
Try to make the challenge something realistic, personal, and a bit challenging in a good way.
For example, you could,
- spend less time scrolling and more time talking to people when your with friends or family.
- Try answering questions yourself before using AI.
- Be more positive and kind online (think before you share – is this necessary? Is this helpful? Is this kind? If not, don’t do it!)
- Put your phone away during conversations – use good body language, make eye contact, face the person who is talking, show that you’re listening by responding or asking questions.

This week we have been reflecting on the importance of communication and are preparing for the celebration of Pentecost on Sunday.
Catholics call Pentecost the “birthday of the Church” because it was the moment when the followers of Jesus were filled with the Holy Spirit and sent out to begin the mission of the Church. This was the first time the disciples truly went out to share the Gospel with the world, which is why Catholics see Pentecost as the beginning, or “birth”, of the Church’s mission.
In your prayer journals, we invite you to take some time to reflect on the joyous occassion that is the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
Pentecost is a moment of transformation. The disciples, who were once unsure and afraid, were filled with courage and sent out to share the Good News with the world. This morning, we’re going to think about the impact of the events of Pentecost and how the Holy Spirit is at work in your life.
In your prayer journals, you could choose to:
- design a poster celebrating Pentecost as the “Birthday of the Church”
- write a short news article reporting on the events of Pentecost as if you were there
- create a birthday card for the Church
- design a storyboard or social media post from the perspective of one of the disciples
- write a prayer inviting the Holy Spirit into your life

As mentioned earlier this week, today is an opportunity to celebrate the gift of diversity and the Holy Spirit in our community! Perhaps you have planned some of the following celebrations during form time today…if so, get some music on and get celebrating culture your form!
- Invite someone in your form to speak a few words in another language or about their culture
- Share snacks or treats from different cultures
- Have a cultural show and tell
- Share a video clip, music or dance from your heritage
Every party needs a party game so we challenge you to take part in a Pentecost Communication Challenge…
🗣️ Option 1: Articulate Challenge
- Split the room into teams
- Students take it in turns to describe a word/phrase without using the word itself or any obvious clues
- Staff or the opposite team might give the player suggestions they need to describe
- The rest of the player’s team must try to guess the word/phrase
- Set a timer for each team/ player
- If the group guesses correctly, award a point and move on to the next player
🎭 Option 2: Charades Challenge
- You may choose to split the form into teams or play as one group
- Students take it in turns so that everyone who wants to can take part
- One student is given a word or phrase and must act it out without speaking at all
- No sounds, letters, or pointing to objects in the room are allowed
- The rest of the team must try to guess what the word or phrase is
- Set a timer for each round
- If the word is guessed correctly within the time, award a point
- Then move on to the next player or team
