Our Word of the Week is Missionary Discipleship.

Missionary Discipleship is the call to share our faith with others.
It reminds us that we are not meant to keep our faith to ourselves – we are called to go out and share the love of Christ, helping to make the world a better place.

It is a way of life filled with joy and hope, where others can encounter Christ through us and the way we live.

Let’s listen to a piece of scripture where Jesus calls us to be missionary disciples…

• What do you think it means to be a follower or disciple of Jesus today?

Today we are going to reflect on how we can be missionary disciples on a global scale. Let’s watch this short video from CAFOD to find out more about one of their current campaigns that we heard about during the Jubilee Year…The Global Debt Crisis

Let’s recap…

All countries sometimes need to borrow money – for example, to build new schools, hospitals, repairs, public transport, respond to emergencies or climate disasters or conflict.

But many low-income countries are stuck in a difficult situation:

• They are being charged very high interest rates (this means when countries borrow money, they don’t just pay back what they borrowed, they have to pay extra money on top, called interest)
  
• Some have already paid back what they have borrowed but the interest keeps growing
  
• This keeps them trapped in a cycle of debt

Money that should go to schools and hospitals is instead used to repay debt. Governments are stuck choosing between helping their people now, or paying off debts to avoid bigger financial problems later.

This isn’t fair and it’s something that can be changed.

Taking Action

Jesus calls us not just to notice injustice, but to respond with compassion and courage. This is one way we can live out our mission – by speaking up for those whose voices are not always heard.

In 2027, the UK will host the G20 Summit, where world leaders can help fix this problem.
The G20 Summit is a meeting where leaders from the world’s 20 most powerful countries come together to talk about important global issues, like money, fairness, and how to help countries in need. They have a lot of influence, so the decisions they make can affect people all over the world.

CAFOD is asking people to sign a Debt Justice Petition to encourage action.

You can take part as a tutor group (and you can go home and share with your families to get them signed up too!):

• A member of staff can sign on behalf of your group
• Staff can include their own name if they wish or you can include your group name, for example:
  “Mr Smith’s Tutor Group – The Becket School”, “Mrs 9R Tutor Group – The Becket School”

Can you help CAFOD reach their target? They’re currently 1,580 away from 5,000 signatures. If every student and staff member at The Becket signed the petition, we would smash the total!

Think about what you have just heard and seen and discuss the following questions…

• Why do you think this situation is unfair?
• How do you think Jesus would respond to this issue?
• What does this teach us about being a missionary disciple today?
• Why might it matter that we take action, even in small ways?

Loving God,
You call us to be missionary disciples,
to care for others and stand up for what is right.

We pray for those affected by poverty and debt,
that they may find justice, hope, and support.

Give world leaders wisdom and compassion,
and help us to play our part in building a fairer world.

May we never ignore the needs of others,
but respond with courage, kindness, and action.

Let us begin by sharing this piece of scripture together and think about how it links to missionary discipleship…

A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans,

As the scripture says, “Everyone who calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.” But how can they call to him for help if they have not believed? And how can they believe if they have not heard the message? And how can they hear if the message is not proclaimed? And how can the message be proclaimed if the messengers are not sent out? As the scripture says, “How wonderful is the coming of messengers who bring good news!”

“How wonderful is the coming of messengers who bring good news!”

The scripture talks about the value of the messengers who bring the good news. If it was not for the first messengers of Jesus, how would we know about Jesus? If it wasn’t for the courage of Jesus’ first messengers, we might not have our wonderful church buildings or Catholic schools that provide safe spaces for us to share and celebrate our faith.

We invite you to think…Is there anyone you could preach to?

Is there someone you know who might not know about Jesus? e.g. someone who doesn’t attend a Catholic School, or maybe someone who does attend a Catholic school but doesn’t go to Church on the weekend, maybe you know of a relative who has lost their faith or who doesn’t believe in anything.

Perhaps you don’t feel very close to Jesus at the moment and you might be that someone who could do with hearing more about the good news.

Use your prayer journals to write a prayer for someone who might not have received the Good News messages about Jesus.

Or if you would prefer, use the space to write some ways in which you can be messengers of Good News to help others feel more hopeful.

If you have space and time, write some ways in which you can be a modern day messenger of Jesus and help others to encounter Him.

Hey everyone, and welcome back! This week, we are diving deep into what it means to live out Missionary Discipleship.

Being a missionary disciple isn’t about packing a bag and flying across the world (unless you’re called to!). It’s about living your faith out loud right where you are. Sharing God’s love through your everyday actions, words, and energy.

Since the World Cup is currently taking over our screens, our living rooms, and our conversations, we are tapping into that incredible stadium energy for today’s DO challenge.

First, let’s ground ourselves in God’s Word.

Before we get active, take a moment to quiet your mind and listen to these words from the Gospel of Matthew. Imagine Jesus as the ultimate manager, gathering the team on the pitch and giving the final pep talk before the big match:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” — Matthew 28:19-20

Jesus isn’t telling us to sit on the bench. He’s calling us into the game. We are sent out to bring His joy to the world!

If you’ve been watching the World Cup, you know there is nothing quite like the roar of the crowd and the catchy, repetitive chants that unite thousands of strangers in one voice. Football fans sing out of pure passion for their team.

As missionary disciples, we have the ultimate good news to celebrate. So today, your challenge is to DO something creative: Write your own missionary discipleship chant or song in the style of a football chant.

How to start:

1. Pick a classic tune: Think of simple, famous stadium anthems 
2. Make it bold: Use words like Go, Send, Team, Follow, Love, and Faith.
3. Keep it catchy: It only needs to be two to four lines long.

Need inspiration? Here is one we made earlier to the tune of “When the Saints Go Marching In”:

Oh when the team, goes marching out, Oh when the team goes marching out, We want to be missionary disciples, When the team goes marching out! Go tell the world! (Clap, clap!) Share Jesus’ love! (Clap, clap!)

Your Turn: Grab a piece of paper, scribble down a quick chant, and if you’re feeling brave, sing it out loud in your kitchen! Feel the joy and energy of being on Team Jesus.

Let’s bring all that energy back to a place of quiet reflection as we pray together.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for calling us to be part of Your team. Thank You for the joy, the passion, and the community You give us. As we watch the world come together for the World Cup, remind us of our bigger mission: to bring Your love to every corner of the earth.

Give us the courage to step off the sidelines and into the game. Help us to shout Your goodness through our actions today. Tune our hearts to Your rhythm, and let our lives be a song of praise to You.

Happy Friday! We have made it to the end of the week, and we hope you’ve been feeling inspired by what it means to be a Missionary Disciple.

So far, we’ve looked at scripture, listened to God’s call, and even channeled our inner World Cup crowd to sing out our faith. Today, we are bringing it all home with a practical, face-to-face team huddle.

In football, a team can’t win the match if the players don’t talk to each other. The same goes for our faith community! Missionary discipleship isn’t a solo sport. We need to encourage each other, call out the best in one another, and hold each other accountable.

Grab the person sitting next to you, a friend, or a family member, and let’s start today’s DO challenge.

Turn to the person next to you. Take a moment to chat through these two quick questions:

• What has “missionary discipleship” actually meant to you this week? (Is there a specific thought, scripture, or moment that stuck with you?)
• How can you do better? Be honest! Where are you fading on the pitch? Maybe you need to be bolder in speaking about your faith, kinder to a specific person, or more committed to your daily prayer time.

Now for the action. Look at the person you just shared your struggles with. You are now each other’s coaches.

Based on what they just told you about how they want to “do better,” set a specific mission for them to complete this weekend.

Rules for the Coach: Make the mission realistic, actionable, and focused on loving others.

• Example: If they said they want to be bolder, your mission for them could be: “Invite one friend to church or youth group this weekend.”
• Example: If they said they want to be kinder, your mission could be: “Do one unexpected chore or favor for a family member today without complaining.”

Write your assigned mission down on a scrap of paper or in your phone notes. You have until Sunday night to complete it!

Let’s pray for the grace and courage to carry out our weekend missions.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for the people sitting next to me today. Thank You that we don’t have to walk this road of faith alone, but that You give us teammates to lift us up when we are tired and challenge us to do better.

Bless the missions we have been given today. Give us the courage to actually step out and do them this weekend. Holy Spirit, give us the right words, the right actions, and a heart full of Your love as we go out to be Your hands and feet.

Amen.
