The Becket way word of the week – Mutual Respect

On average we will meet 80,000 people in our lifetime. In a vast majority of those interactions we will not have much in common with people and we will probably disagree with their views on the world. What should underpin all of these relationships is “mutual respect”, that we recognise their right to make choices and decisions, even when if we think they are wrong.

As Catholics we believe that each person is made as a unique reflection of God’s personhood and therefore they deserve respect. The relationship between staff and students is based on these values and staff will always treat students with respect; in return students MUST be respectful to staff. This includes the way we speak, our body language and our attitude to learning. Respect, at The Becket, is not earnt, it is the fundamental right of everybody and when we interact or speak with others we treat them with dignity and with respect.

The Word of the week is “Pentecost”! We have entered into June – the month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

On Friday, we are celebrating culture day!! This special occasion has been organised by our brilliant “Respect and Diversity” Chaplaincy Mission Team as part of our Pentecost celebrations. As we celebrate the sharing of the Good news across many languages and cultures, our students want to recognise and celebrate the many cultures and backgrounds that make up our vibrant school community.

On Monday, there is a Eco and Sustainability Team meeting at 12:30. Please drop by and you can have your lunch after the meeting!

On Wednesday, there is a Prayer and Liturgy Team meeting at 12:30. Please drop by and you can have your lunch after the meeting!

On Friday, a new club “Spirited Arts” is being launched in the RE department by Miss Weetman. See the poster below for more details!

Sports Day will be taking place on the 9th and 10th July. Please see the email from Mr Marlow regarding the sign up form for the events. Please make sure to have completed and returned your sports day form by the 27th June.

Good morning and welcome to this week’s Celebration of the Word which is going to be led by some of the Respect and Diversity team!

It’s time to change the atmosphere in the room as we prepare for this worship, perhaps you could turn the lights off, light an electric candle if you have one in your rooms and make sure that we are slanting, ready to listen to the words of scripture.

Your Mission

To complete this week’s mission and prepare for Friday’s celebrations, you will need to have a pack of flame crown resources (available for staff to collect from the staff room). As you heard in this morning’s COTW…

You can start your flame crown today during form time and keep adding to it throughout the week.

Then on Friday, you’ll be able to wear your crown during form time and throughout the day if you want to! You’re also welcome to wear cultural clothing or colours linked to your family’s heritage or national flag on Friday. The details and guidelines have already been shared with your parents and staff by email and they are also included under the notices tab.

The word of the week is Pentecost! Let’s head over to some of the Respect and Diversity Team to learn more about this feast and some of the celebrations that are coming up this week!

As you heard in yesterday’s COTW, make sure to make your Pentecost party hats for Friday’s form time…

On your flame crown, you could include:

• Flags, patterns or colours that represent your family or cultural heritage
  
• Words or phrases in different languages that are meaningful to you
  
• Or a short prayer or scripture quote asking the Holy Spirit to guide and bless our school
  

You can start your flame crown today during form time and keep adding to it throughout the week.

Then on Friday, you’ll be able to wear your crown and culture clothing during form time and throughout the day if you want to!

Friday form time celebrations

On Friday during form time, you’ll also have the chance to organise your own form celebration – with the permission and support from your form tutor, your form might:

• Bring in snacks or treats from different cultures to share
  
• Have a cultural show and tell
  
• Share a video clip, music or dance from your heritage
  
• Or invite someone in your form to speak a few words in another language or about their culture
  

On Friday, the chaplaincy camera will be making its way around for you to have group photos and be recorded if you want to share anything about your culture!

Please drop Ruth/Joe an email if your form has party plans and would like a visit from the camera and we will do our best to visit you!

Today we are going to hear the story of Jesus’ Ascension and the Day of Pentecost through scripture inspired poetry and a LEGO stop-motion animation.

You may wish to start decorating and colouring in your flame crowns as you watch and listen.

As you continue with your flame crowns, discuss the following questions with your partners as we reflect on the story of Pentecost we have just heard…

If you could speak another language instantly like the disciples did, what language would you choose and why? Would you use the language to help someone or to travel somewhere?

Why do you think it’s important that people from all over the world heard the message of Jesus in their own language at Pentecost?
What does that tell us about God and the Church?

The Church is made up of people from every nation.
What would a birthday party for a Church like that look like? What music, food, languages, or decorations would be there?

The Holy Spirit helped the disciples feel brave.
Can you think of a time when you needed to be brave to speak up, share something, or try something new?

Let us pray…

Holy Spirit, open our ears to hear your voice in every language and culture. Help us to understand and appreciate the diversity of your creation. Amen.

The Feast of Pentecost is often called the Church’s birthday because it marks the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and empowered them to spread the Gospel.

So today, in our prayer journals, we are going to take some time to design a birthday card poster for the Church.

Think about what you would want to say to the Church or celebrate about the church on its birthday:

• What do you love about being part of a church community?… community, the sacraments, the teachings of Jesus, or the peace and support it brings to your life.
• What gifts does the Church bring to the world today?
• What message of hope could you share with others through your card design?
  

Think about images that celebrate the Holy Spirit and the Church — you might include flames, a dove, wind, or a group of people from different cultures to show that the Church is for everyone, everywhere.

You might like to include a birthday message, a short prayer, a symbol of the Holy Spirit like a dove or flame, or a Bible verse that reminds you of the Church’s mission.

Take the next few minutes to quietly reflect and begin your design as you listen to this worship song below…

Holy Spirit, thank you for the gift of the Church, our spiritual home. Guide us as we seek to use our gifts and talents to build up the Body of Christ. Help us to be active and engaged members of our Church community, striving to live out the Gospel in our daily lives. Inspire us to be instruments of your love and peace in the world. Amen.
