The Becket way word of the week – Collective Responsibility

At the Becket School we are one community with a core mission to support all of our students to work hard, be loving and do the right thing.  We all have a role to ensure that each one of us has the best opportunities to do this and be successful in our academic work and our social and spiritual development.  We all have a role to play in making Becket the place we want it to be.  During your time at Becket you will be part of many smaller communities whether that be in the classroom, form group, year group, extra curricular clubs etc.  It will be important that you follow rules and expectations so that everyone in the community can maximise their learning or experience offered. 

Share with your tutor group – Why are rules important in school? How do they keep everyone safe?

Incorporate it within your conversation with students during lesson or unstructured time.

• The happy repose of the soul of Pope Francis who died on Easter Monday
• The Catholic Church across the world, as we mourn the death of Pope Francis and celebrate his wonderful life
• Cardinals of the Catholic Church who will be discerning and voting for a new pope in Rome

Key Stage Celebration of the Word and Catholic Life Rota:

This week’s Celebration of the Word is virtual and can be accessed on Thursday.

On Wednesday, there will be a Justice and Peace meeting in the Chapel at 12:30pm. We are looking for helpers to be in our Benin fundraising update video! Please come to the chapel at 12:30 and eat lunch after the quick meeting.

The chapel will be open at break and lunchtime for prayer and quiet reflection. A Remembrance book and prayer table for Pope Francis will be available for anyone who wishes to leave a message or say a prayer.

On Friday, year 7 have their Easter themed retreat day. Year 7 will have normal form time and then they will be off timetable for the rest of the day completing workshops, tasks and reflections. The day will start at 9:05 in the hall and after Becket Reads, students will take part in a carousel of workshops in A floor classrooms. More details will be shared to staff via email.

Year 7 need to wear their normal school uniform and bring in their normal equipment (pencil cases, water bottles, lunch, conduct card etc), but they do not need to bring their PE kits or work books.

Year 10 Briars Retreat – 14th – 16th May

Please make sure to return your parental consent health forms and behaviour contracts to the office or the chapel as soon as possible. You will not be allowed to attend the retreat unless these forms are returned correctly.

School Council update

After listening to student concerns over crowding on the stairs, the School Council encourage everyone to keep to the left on the stairs and in corridors as much as possible. You may have seen their posters to share this message. They have also filmed this information video to promote stairway safety. Enjoy!

Thousands of churches and schools around the world will be preparing a space for people to pray for and celebrate the life of Pope Francis during this time of mourning. Here at the Becket School, we will have a prayer station in our chapel and a prayer station in our reception. In the chapel, there will be a book of Remembrance for students, staff and friends of the school to write prayers, give thanks and share memories or reflections of the life of Pope Francis.

This morning, we invite you to write a contribution to the book of remembrance. Each form will receive a piece of paper which will be later stuck in our book of Remembrance for Pope Francis.

You may wish to:

• discuss favourite memories or prayers of Pope Francis as a form and write one prayer and reflection as a form group
  or
• pass the paper around the room for each student to write their own shorter prayer or reflection to celebrate the life of Pope Francis

Please make sure to write your prayers or reflections in your best handwriting and make your forms page look beautiful for our book!

We don’t want to rush your prayers and reflections so if you need extra form time this week, please use it. Once you have finished your form’s entry for our book of Remembrance, please deliver it to the chapel or drop it off in Ruth/Joe’s tray in the staffroom – thank you.

that your Church may always remain that holy people,

Alleluia! It’s time for this week’s Celebration of the Word

Easter Sunday marked the beginning of a new Liturgical season in the Church, and the most important Liturgical season of them all…Eastertide! Please make sure to update your Liturgical colour on your flip chart.

Eastertide is a glorious season when we celebrate the new and eternal life Christ’s Resurrection brings to us all. It’s a time to embrace God’s love, share kindness and share the Easter joy with others!

This week’s Celebration of the Word is brought to you by some of the year 7 Chaplaincy Team. There are mission cards in the staffroom for each form group to collect for the mission.

For this weeks mission, the team have created a little competition to share the Easter joy!

On A floor there are some Easter puzzle posters, you need to:

• Find them as you go about your daily life in school and solve the puzzle
• Write the answer to the puzzle on your mission card
• Write down where you found the clue
• Find someone, this could be staff, students or visitors and share the easter message with them (as the scripture calls us to! and get them to sign your card to confirm that they have heard the Easter message!
• You need a new person for each Easter message.
• Once all the boxes are filled in, write your name and form on the back, hand in your answer sheet to the chapel and you will be entered into the prize draw.

The answer sheets are quite small so please use the back of the sheet if you need more space!

Doesn’t it feel great to be in the season of Eastertide? Yes, that’s right… We can finally say the word again… ALLELUIA!! We want you to hear this word loud and clear so let’s all shout the word Alleluia together… 1… 2… 3… ALLELUIA!!!!

Jesus has risen and Christians around the world are buzzing about it! 

Alleluia is a joyful word which means ‘praise God’!

Let’s get talking in your forms and listening to what each of us are grateful for in this Easter season. Answer the following questions in your pairs and feedback to the rest of your form before completing the prayer journal activity…

What is a joyful memory or moment from your Easter break?

What are you thankful for and what do you want to praise God for? Perhaps something you got to do over the half term (a day trip, holiday, favourite meal or favourite Easter treat from the weekend?!) or perhaps you are thankful for someone you got to see, or perhaps you are grateful to be back at school and reunite with your friends.

In your prayer journals, write or draw what you want to shout ‘Alleluia!’ and praise God for. There might be a few things so take your time and reflect on all the wonderful things in your life.

As you listen to the song below…Write the word Alleluia in your best handwriting in your journals and surround and decorate the word with joyful words, drawings and all of the things that you are grateful for.

Alleluia Bunting

To help us get into the Easter spirit, we would love it if forms could work on a set of Easter bunting to share joy and celebrate the Easter season! There are Easter bunting templates in the staffroom to collect. Share the bunting flags across the form, decorate them to look beautiful, hole punch, add string and then hang your Easter bunting somewhere special in your form room for this Easter season! Perhaps on your prayer board or in your door way so that people can see it when they enter your room.

Let’s end with a prayer…

Lord Jesus, You have risen from the dead and filled the world with new life – Alleluia! Thank you for the love, hope, and blessings you give us every day – our families, friends, teachers, and all the good things in our lives.

Help us to live with grateful hearts and share your love with others, just like you shared your life with us. Alleluia! Amen.

Our brilliant fundraising projects continue for the Lourdes group and the Our Lady of Hope school in Benin…consider bringing in some money to get involved, treat yourself or others and show your support for some great causes!

The Justice and Peace Team will be recording a short video to share adverts and some of the success of our fundraising so far at 12:30 on Wednesday in the chapel – please come to the chapel if you would like to be involved!
