Celebration of the Word Rota

9T have planned this week’s resources and for the ‘do day’ activity they would like everyone to take part in an ‘awe and wonder’ walk one morning in your year groups (similar to our well-being walk that took place in May). This means that your see/hear/think/do days will be in a different order to normal. Please make sure to attend your COTW and wonder walk on your assigned days and use the see/hear/think resources on the other mornings in your form room.

Good morning, we welcome God into this space as we make the Sign of the Cross.  In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

For our hear resource, 9T would like you to listen to and reflect on the scripture that narrates Jesus walking on water.

Please choose someone to read the scripture out loud to the form and make sure that everyone listens carefully.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew,
All: Glory to You O Lord

Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.

When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

“We thought this scripture linked to awe and wonder because the miracle of Jesus walking on water shows God’s control over nature and God’s omnipotence (this means that God is all powerful).
When Peter tries to walk on water and begins to sink, Jesus saves him, showing that we can trust in Jesus even when we are afraid.”

In your prayer journals, as you listen to the song below, use coloured pencils illustrate a scene from the scripture passage that speaks to you or stands out to you. This could be Jesus walking on the water, Peter stepping out of the boat, or Jesus reaching out to save Peter. Think about why this part of the scripture stands out to you most and write a one line prayer to share your needs or gratitude with God.

What part of the story of Jesus walking on water stands out to you the most? Why?

How would you feel if you were one of the disciples in the boat? Would you have reacted like Peter?

Peter showed great faith by stepping out onto the water. When have you shown faith in a challenging situation? How did it feel?

Dear Lord, open our hearts and minds to the wonders of Your works. Help us to see the miracles in our lives and strengthen our faith. Amen

For our think prayer resource, 9T have decided to lead you in something called “lectio divina”. The year 9 Briars group were inspired by some of the different methods of prayer they were shown on their retreat, one being lectio divina.

Lectio Divina is a way of praying with the Bible. It involves reading a Bible passage slowly and thoughtfully, reflecting on its meaning, praying about what it says to you, and resting in God’s presence.

It’s like having a conversation with God through the scriptures.

It is a calm and relaxing way of praying and we hope it allows you to start your day in a calm way and give you some time to think.

Get into a comfortable and peaceful position. Remove any distractions and close your eyes or rest your head on the desk if it helps you to concentrate on the words better.

If you still have space in your prayer journals on your awe and wonder pages, you may wish to journal as you listen to the scripture and doodle key lines or words that stand out to you.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the amazing world You’ve created. Fill my heart with awe and wonder at Your greatness. Help me see Your beauty in everything around me. May Your Holy Spirit guide me to appreciate the miracles in everyday life and remind me of Your constant presence and love.

Awe and Wonder Walk

We remember that we meet in the presence of God by making the Sign of the Cross…In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

This week we are reflecting on the theme of awe and wonder, but perhaps we aren’t feeling our most ‘in awe’ when we are sat in the classroom that we see day in day out.
Last week, 9T decided that they would like everyone to take part in an awe and wonder walk for your ‘do’ day this week – to truly experience the awe and wonder of God’s creation and with the hope that we can feel closer to our creator through being outside and in nature.

Sometimes we can take God’s creation for granted, on most days we encounter nature and see things like leaves, trees, insects and flowers but how often do we stop and think about wonderful and intricate these creations truly are?

The awe and wonder walk will run very similarly to the well-being walk that took place in May but this time we will walk around the field (as there is slightly more nature around to be appreciate!) The same expectations and rules apply.

We hope that this will be a really enjoyable way to explore this week’s theme of awe and wonder, plus we have some great weather to enjoy this week too!
You must make sure that you listen to and abide by the following expectations for the walk, especially if this is something that you would like the opportunity to do more often in form time.

Expectations for the walk:

• You must walk in pairs (or threes if necessary) only. No larger groups (do a staggered start to the walk if necessary)
• You must walk sensibly, calmly and respect the environment we are walking in
• You are allowed to talk quietly in your pair or three but there must be no shouting, screaming or singing across different pairs/threes – this is really important because other tutor groups will be doing their form prayer in classrooms and year 10 and year 12 will doing their exams, therefore we must be respectful.
  There may also be members of the public using the grassy areas next to our school therefore we must be following the Becket Way at all times as you represent your school.

On the walk…

• You are going to be allowed to choose the pair or three you would like to walk with, with the hope that you will feel comfortable to be open in your conversations. Please do not join other groups, stick with your two/three.
• Here are some things that we would like you to talk about on your walk:
• Where is your favourite place to walk?
• How does being in nature make you feel and why?
• Has a walk or experience of nature ever made you reflect on God’s power and creativity?
• If you could visit any beautiful part of the world, where/what would it be and why?

8:45 – Expectations
8:50 – Leave your bags and exit sensibly to the field
9:00 – back to form room to collect bags and settle for period 1

Route: Walk clockwise around the field (start walking left alongside long jump)

Dear God, as we walk today, open our eyes to see Your wonders in nature. Help us to feel Your presence and be filled with awe and wonder at the world You have made.
