Celebration of the Word

There will be no in person COTW this week. A video link COTW will be shared with staff by email from Mr Udoh to watch in your form rooms during one of our form time prayers this week.

Well Done!

A huge well done to all students who participated in sports day last week and thank you to the PE staff and PE students for organising and running it!

Well done to our fundraising face painters who made over £80 for CAFOD!

The chapel will be closed at break and lunchtimes this week as Ruth and Joe are on the Lourdes pilgrimage with some of our year 12s. The chapel will be open next week and we will be looking to capture final clips for the end of year video!

Pay to Play – Friday P5

On Friday during period 5, some of the justice and peace team in 10R have organised the school to take part in a fundraiser for CAFOD. You will hear more about the fundraiser under the ‘hear’ tab.

When we feel grateful for what we have, it naturally leads us to want to share our blessings with others. Gratitude opens our hearts to see the needs around us and inspires us to act in love.

Let’s ‘hear’ what some of our students have been inspired to organise after reflecting on the needs of others in last couple of weeks and how you can help!…

A reminder of the details:

On Friday 19th July, Period 5, we are going to be running a school Pay to Play fundraiser for Years 7-10, some of you might remember this from two years ago.

We are asking you to make a donation of £2, which will be collected during tutor time on Thursday 18th and there will be a mop up collection on Friday 19th. 

Obviously, if you can donate more then that would be amazing but £2 is our suggested donation.

This is an opportunity for us to put our faith into action. To celebrate and give thanks for the freedoms and safety that we are privileged to have at The Becket School, whilst showing care and empathy to those who don’t have safety or dignity.

Students can wear their full uniform or PE kits on this day, and you will need to bring your normal and required equipment.

This is going to be a great opportunity for us to show solidarity with those who are in need and who are living in unsafe and undignified conditions.

Please get involved and bring your money in on Thursday and Friday this week!

Israeli-Palestinian Crisis Appeal Update | CAFOD

CAFOD in occupied Palestinian territory and Israel

CAFOD is working with Christian, Jewish, Muslim and secular partners in occupied Palestinian territory and Israel to:

• mitigate disruption to Palestinian families’ daily lives in the West Bank, especially through legal challenges to house demolition, land confiscation and violent attacks
• help poor families in Gaza meet basic needs and improve their coping strategies
• defend the human dignity of migrant workers and asylum seekers
• support Arab Israeli women to secure fair employment and lift their families out of poverty
• support young people to develop their talents, engage actively in society, and work confidently and constructively to promote freedom of expression and respectful dialogue
• stand in solidarity with all Israelis and Palestinians working for peace with justice.

Please bring in what you can for our pay to play fundraiser! £2 is our suggested donation.

We pray for all who are experiencing the terror of war and conflict, particularly those who are forced to flee their homes in fear. May God grant that they find open doors, minds and hearts wherever they seek shelter and peace.

A few weeks ago, when the word of the week was “Eucharist”, we asked you to write down a question that you had about the Catholic Mass and stick it on your form room doors. Members of the Chaplaincy team from 10R and 10B took the camera around school to photograph your questions. Since then, we have interviewed Fr Simon Gillespie, past student of The Becket School to answer our questions and we are going to listen to his responses today.

What has this got to do with gratitude?… The word Eucharist means “to give thanks”.

“The Eucharist is an act of thanksgiving to God” – The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1329)

Let’s listen to question time with Fr Simon as we give thanks for the Sacrament of Holy Communion, which enables us to experience and receive the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

As we reflect on the gift of the Eucharist and all things we are grateful for this week, we would like you to write a thank you prayer in your prayer journals as you listen to the song below…

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gift of the Eucharist, where we receive Jesus and His unconditional love for us.

Thank you for our Catholic schools, where we learn and grow in faith.

Thank you for our churches, where we gather to worship and find community and friendship.

Thank you for our clergy and staff, who guide us and serve with dedication.

Help us to appreciate all these blessings and to share your love with others.

Amen.

As we approach the final week of the academic year(!), 10R wanted to launch a final house competition to reflect on the theme of gratitude and to help you to win those important points before the House results are revealed next Friday!

We would like you to write your best Acrostic Poem as a form group. An acrostic poem is a type of poetry where the first letter of each line spells out a word or message. For our competition, each line of your poem will begin with a letter from the word “GRATITUDE.”

An example of an acrostic poem is below…but we want yours to be more personal to reflect some of the things and encounters that happened to your form and that you are grateful for over the last academic year.

Giving thanks for every day,
Remembering blessings in every way.
Appreciating friends, both near and far,
Thanking God for who we are.
In every moment, finding joy,
Trusting in God,
Understanding love, sharing cheer,
Deep in our hearts, God is near.
Ever grateful, year after year.

Please email to Ruth or drop off your poems in Chapel and make sure to put your form group on your poem. Poems will win points and the best poems might win a prize! We might even ask each form to read out their poem as part of our end of year celebration next Friday…

Next Week – Each form will have something to prepare for our final Celebration of the Word and this will be shared with form tutors next week.

God our Father, thank you for this week and all your blessings. Thank you for the lessons we have learnt and the challenges we have faced. Fill our hearts with gratitude and joy on this Friday and throughout the weekend and help us to share our gratitude and Your Love with all who we encounter.
